Rhys: Sorry, some shit went down and I’m with my brother right now. I have no idea when I’m coming home, but I’ll be there as soon as I can. Let me know if you need anything while I’m out.
The text was so domestic, Trevor actually had to set his phone down and walk away from it. He knew that fucking Rhys the night before was going to change things, and sleeping with him after—wrapped up in his arms like he never wanted to leave—was going to cement that change into something permanent. There was no going back after post-coitus snuggles. He’d either stepped into the best thing in the world, or he’d doomed what might have been an amazing, life-long friendship.
Either way, there wasn’t much he could do about it. He’d woken up nearly an hour before Rhys and had started coffee and breakfast before the other man woke. He had intended on having something cheap and greasy ready for Ryan’s inevitable hang-over as a way of showing both sympathy and maybe easing the guy into the idea of his brother being bisexual.
Rhys had woken not long after, and the two of them had shared a few heated kisses over coffee, right up against the counter. Then all hell had broken loose. Or well, Trevor imagined it did. Ryan stumbled into the room, half-dressed and frantic, mumbling something about Cole and a crisis at his house. Rhys promised to explain when he got back, then he’d taken off, and that was the last Trevor had seen of him.
He had a shift early in the afternoon to prep for the night rush since Thursdays came with discounts and happy hour food, and he was always happy to lend a hand. The threat in the folded up note still loomed, but he wasn’t ready to give up just yet. A few more shifts and he could at least afford the doctor’s appointment and his next month’s dose of his hormone and syringes. The lab would bill him, and he’d worry about the mounting debt later.
He managed to laze around for as long as he could afford it, then quickly showered and dressed. The drive to the bar was quick, and as he slipped through the employee entrance, he saw one of the early afternoon servers waiting for him. She was a short, young girl named Tamara who headed toward him with a look of confused purpose on her face. He hovered near his cubby, shoving his coat inside, watching her out of his periphery.
“So uh,” she said, fidgeting with the front pocket of her apron, “some guy came by and told me I had to give this to you. I thought maybe he was like a process server or some shit, but he didn’t have me sign for anything.” She withdrew a thin envelope from her apron and held it out gingerly, like it might explode if she didn’t handle it carefully.
Trevor felt his throat go a little tight, but he managed to affect a smile as he plucked it from her fingers.
